Piracy is a big problem for Nigerian songs at it belittles the profit made by musicians in spite of their hardwork and talent. Pirates truly exist around the world but in Nigeria, they exist more easily with the weak persecution given to them by the govt and govt laws which are not stong enough to stem the tide
Nigerian musicians try hard as they might to produce their first hit track expecting to make more money from it but theses priates turn their expected earnings into a piece of cake. Should i really be referring to it as expected earnings since they're already aware that it's a fundamental problem in the society in which they live and and make their living.
Piracy rips the artiste of his rights to sale and royalty on sale of his mental work and although there are laws against piracy. It's execution is not strong enough to discourage people from engaging in producing or buying these products and so the final burden will have to fall on the interest groups within the music industry to wage the war against piracy in order to protect their interests. Dbanj aka the Kokomaster is part of a group that is fighting this battle in ridding off pirates from their hardwork. Other artistes have also partaken and supported this campaign against piracy of Nigeria songs but it seems that there can hardly make any significant change as it appears that the problem has become institutionalized and not just encourage by the socio-economic problems affecting the country in terms of living costs and social trends, but also a political one with the govt showing little or no interest in protecting these rights. These factors encourage piracy to boom and with even newer technologies from China and the Chinese, the internet, piracy is assuming a new face in Nigeria. I hope they'll be able to curtail these problecm so that Nigerian songs will be given its due worth.
